Your kitchen is where food meets the materials it's stored in, prepared on, and cooked with. These products have been selected because their food-contact surfaces don't contain synthetic polymers — meaning no microplastic particles end up in your meals, regardless of how you cook, cut, or store food.
We assessed each product based on the materials that come into direct contact with food. Glass, stainless steel, cast iron, wood, and natural fibres pass our assessment. Products with plastic food-contact surfaces — even food-safe, BPA-free plastics — are excluded from this list because the mechanical and thermal stresses of kitchen use make microplastic shedding inevitable over time.
Two findings stood out. First, the volume of microplastics from chopping boards is staggering: up to 50.7mg per chopping session from a plastic board, according to research in Environmental Science & Technology. That's visible to the naked eye if you collected it. Second, we found that 'wooden' chopping boards aren't always what they seem — some boards marketed as wood are actually wood-plastic composites. The Epicurean boards we recommend use a wood fibre composite (Richlite) that's NSF-certified and doesn't contain plastic polymers.
Prioritise replacing items that involve heat and cutting: non-stick pans (when they show wear) and plastic chopping boards are the two highest-impact swaps. Glass food storage is the next priority — especially if you currently microwave food in plastic containers. Cast iron cookware seems expensive upfront, but a Lodge skillet at £30-45 will outlast five generations of non-stick pans.
Brabantia
Based on available material data, the Brabantia Make & Take lunch box uses a stainless steel body for all food-contact surfaces. Food sits in the steel body, not touching the polypropylene lid. The stainless steel construction cannot shed microplastics into your food.
