Based on Smol's published ingredient information, the cleaning agents are plant-derived and Smol states the capsules contain no microplastic ingredients. The capsule film is polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) — a water-soluble synthetic polymer. The EU microplastic restriction exempts polymers that dissolve, but the ASA has ruled that exemption is not itself evidence a film is plastic-free, and its environmental fate is unresolved — hence likely free.
